I used to think “debt-free” was a pipe dream or something for someone else but not for me. After all, how in the world could I not have a house payment or a car payment? It seemed impossible and absurd really. And truthfully, I felt it was unnecessary.
And then, reality hit as it often does and I realized…being debt-free IS necessary for us in order to be able to do the things we dream of doing. The reality that our son is almost halfway through high school and we don’t have enough in savings to pay for his college degree outright was a HUGE wake-up call. We don’t want him to have to take out college loans. We don’t. There’s no reason he should have to start his adult life already in debt. That’s just how we feel about it.
The even starker reality is we haven’t paid off my husband’s student loans for his MBA yet! You know why? We didn’t have a plan. We thought car loans and student loans and credit card debt were status quo and for whatever reason, we were okay with it.
